CHINA. Shanghai. 1996. On the nights before major holidays, such as National Day (October 1), celebrating the founding of the PeopleÕs Republic of China, and May Day (May 1), buildings are illuminated in the Waitan (Bund) area along the bank of the Huang Pu River, motor vehicle traffic is stopped, and the main road is thrown open to pedestrians. Several hundred thousand visitors crowd the area to enjoy the brightly lit night scenery. Lights from high-rise buildings and the giant TV tower in the Pudong area on the opposite side of the river add to the scene. Families enjoy eating out at the many restaurants in the area.
