INDIA. “Women Changing India”. State of Gujarat. Kutch District. Slum village of Bhuj. April 2010. KMVS - Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan, is a Kutch – Gujarat based women’s organization which was initiated and promoted in 1989 which emphasis has been empowerment of women. It enables women to access information, training, and skills. As well as handicraft production, KMVS organizes programs in natural resource management, education for women and girls, health education, family planning, and legal support. It runs a radio broadcast in tribal dialect, a newsletter, a self-managed screen-printing-unit, and a savings and credit program. Here is the first urban initiative by KMVS, started two years ago, to organize a group of women from the Maheshwari community to collect solid waste, in the market in Bhuj. They are called "Sakhis", which means "Friend". They earn 2000 rupees per month and work from 9h30 to 12h30 every day of the week including Sundays. They are paid by the municipality of Bhuj.
