Nhamatanda district. Mozambique. A Grandmother raising her grandchildren orphaned by AIDS. Nhamatanda Clinic and Village-This is a district level clinic located 2 hours drive out of Beira. We visited a district hospital and met the local authorities running the operation. This clinic has an innovative program in which 25 local villagers volunteer to head up education programs and run small (one room) clinics located within each little village in the area. The Nhamatanda clinic is where the volunteer group is based out of. We did interview with all 25 and then two volunteers joined us as we went to the village where a clinic is located. We were greeted at the village with dancing and singing by the village women and children and then one of the volunteers presented an education lesson on health issues for the villagers. We met the Chief, the teachers, visited the school, and met some villagers affected by HIV primarily (homes headed by orphaned children or grandmothers raising grandchildren because the parents have died from AIDS or other health-related issues). Photos and videos from this location include scenes from the clinic, sit-down interviews with volunteers and local authorities, a lot of great interaction with locals including traditional African singing and dancing, portraits of families, scenes from the school, and two of the 25 volunteers in a tiny clinic. We did multiple sit-down interviews at this location (all in Portugues) the names and titles are contained within the interviews and must be confirmed but I remember the following: 1st interview was head or assistant head of health Manuel Jose Bero, 2nd interview was with the governor (or equivalent) of the District, 3rd Interview was 25 volunteers, and 4th interview was with Dr. Albertino, Director at Nhamatanda.
