UKRAINE. Zarichne. West of Chernobyl. School and activity centre provided by the Chernobyl Development and Recovery Programme, initiated by the United Nations, in order to encourage people to stay in the village, despite the potential risk of contamination. The level of background radiation is much lower than in other nearby areas. The effects of the accident at Chernobyl is a potential timebomb for the future generations. Serious questions about the consequences on the genetical patrimony need to be asked constantly and added to the general debate. May-June 2008.
