The Chelsea Hotel, the great red edifice on Manhattan's roaring 23rd Street, has been - and still is - home for probably more "characters" than any other single building in America. Artists, writers, musicians, performers and those whose greatest creations are themselves have all resided at the hotel. It remains, amidst all the city's galvanising changes, shabby and glorious, sordid and superb.
