Maoist rebels in Nepal
Since 1996 Nepal has been in the throes of a Maoist insurgency, which has claimed 12,000 lives so far. Today the communist rebels and the government forces, headed by King Gyanendra, are at a stalemate: The King controls the cities, while the Maoists run most of rural Nepal. Far from being the Shangri-La described in tourism book, Nepal today is a country of violent turmoil, stark poverty and an uncertain future.
