Reversing a 26 year-old American policy, Secretary of State Condolezza Rice announced that the U.S. is prepared to sit at the negotiating table with Europeans to convince Iran to give up its perceived military nuclear ambitions. Former President Jimmy Carter had broken off diplomatic relations with Iran in 1980 after U.S. diplomats were taken hostage in Tehran on Nov. 4, 1979 and held for 444 days.
