Twenty years after the massacre in El Mozote, the town remembers those that were lost in a mass burial for the bodies that have been recently recovered in exhumations. The ceremony, lasting 6 hours, is for 230 bodies that have been found out of the 811 people that went missing from the town in the early eighties. In the middle of the civil war in El Salvador, the American trained and financed Atlacatl Battalion made an example out this small town in the guerilla stronghold of Morazan. Rufina AMAYA, the single known survivor and eyewitness to this terror, made the story known to the world with her accounts of the atrocities that were carried out. This story was dismissed by the Reagan administration and the government of El Salvador, who said it, was guerilla propaganda. For the next 11 years, government and military denied that there was ever a massacre in El Mozote. Although the bodies were initially going to be used as evidence in war trials, El Salvador passed an amnesty ruling, so the exhumations going on today are to bring closure to the families that lost loved ones in the massacre.
