Bucharest has an estimated 3000 homeless people, representing 0,15% of the city's population.

MSF runs a programme for the homeless population in Bucharest, about half of whom are migrants from other provinces

The assistance programme for Bucharest's homeless started in 1997 when an MSF team provided mobile medical care on the streets of the capital. In 1998 MSF opened a centre for homeless people providing a board spectrum of medical and social care.

Collaboration with the Romanian ministry of health has been progressing since and now MSF is creating a medical network for homeless people involving Bucharest's hospital. MSF collaborates with the local aid agency, Casa Ioanna, which runs a night shelter with temporary beds. MSF also lobbies national authorities and the Romanian society in order to highlight the problems of homelessness.
